The best is in an informal 'kaffee-klatch' type of meeting where people on at least two levels of the organization are urged to speak their minds. All present should be familiar with parliamentary procedures but not ruled by them and feel free to state opinions, air greivances and seek answers.

Unfortunately, this ideal goal is seldom reached due to professional jealousies, petty sniping and - too often - downright hot-headedness.

Types, I don't know about, but I have never liked the pure brainstorming sessions with creative leaders and thought development tools and tricks. I have always liked the sessions done in a context especially with sales and marketing types.

Customer Planning sessions which include all subjects...marketing, advertising, sales customer support, etc. Let them roll, you will get some ideas and a lot of inhibitors defined.

I especially like using older style Japanese quality training methodologies slightly corrupted for marketing. Theories of cause, fishbone diagrams:

(with the starting premise that we don't have enough customers paying us enough money) what are the theories of cause, etc. Kaizan for the quality improvement process. Lots of sites making a religion out of it, for brainstorming just use the concepts of theories of cause and continuous improvement. Especially, eye opening usually comes back to teams own actions are creating the problems. Try to work on one theory of cause at a time. Very effective in almost any discipline.

And, Internet profile definition and acquisition discussions. Can't find the link at the moment but some professor in England has some excellent material on the subject. I stay out of the details of how to get them to the site and how to get them to take an action. The lower the detail the less brainstorming in my opinion. Excellent at spotting segmentation shifts in a quick moving Global economy. First technique for us that picked up the trend of the emerging work group decision makers and the way they search and buy.

Finally, in recent years, the software development community has come up the Agile development process (iterative and good enough), the community concept with ecosystem analogies (coral reefs, etc.). And, the concept of the "walking skeleton", a stripped down version of a business process without all of the exceptions, complexity and confusion, are excellent discussion venues for brainstorming and applicable across many disciplines. Starts moving you in the direction of understanding work groups. Very valuable.

I decide on a focus area, and pick an environment which is going to generate the best ideas to improve or exploit an area. I insist that actionable ideas come out of the process (not consensus), otherwise it is a social activity (which might be OK if that is your objective).
