My husband received a call today at work, the caller ID showed his cellphone number which he had. It said something like "Did you know there was an unauthorized charge on your credit card for a hotel in Guatamala?". Luckily he just hung up because I think this was a phishing scam. He doesn't have any credit cards, but I do... but none of them have his work number OR cellphone number as a contact. Has anyone had anything like this happen to them or know anything about this? How did they get his work number and cell number and how did they get the caller ID to show a name and phone number they obviously weren't calling from???

Spoofing phone numbers is easy. You don't need to know how it is done, just that it is possible to do. I recommend that you and your husband check your credit reports to make sure that your records are clean.

The first thing you need to do right away is call the number on the back of your credit card and ask them if they called you. Make sure you did not ever give this number as an alternate contact number when you applied for the credit card

If they know nothing then it's a scam. Somehow the scammers bought a mailing list from some company he does business with that has his work and cell phone numbers.

It's hard to say how they did it, but it's not uncommon for work numbers to be subject to calls like that since businesses are exempt for the no-call list.
