Can someone give me the reasons to get an 855 toll free number when I already have an 800?

I guess the FCC recently announced that the target date for releasing the 855 prefix has finally been set for October 1, 2010. As someone who is in the process of building my own small business, I have been looking into the advantages of using toll free numbers for my business, but I'm finding that most of my preferred toll free numbers are already in use.

I think the 855 prefix release has the potential to be a big deal for small business owners. If there are specific vanity phone numbers you've always wished you could get, then it looks like you could get your chance this year. It appears there is at least one provider is already placing customer requests in a queue pending the release date, and there are probably more:

Hope this helps!

First of all you cannot reserve an 855 toll free number. Despite what many companies are claiming the FCC has not released them yet and has made no plans to. They only guarantee they've made is that they will be released before October of 2011. Secondly IF they were released the benefit or reserving an 855 would be if you could find a really great custom number that is already taken under all of the other toll free area codes. In that case it could be better than your current 800 number. Of course I'd advise keeping them both.
